MPH – The Degree of Choice for Future Problem Solvers in Health?

February 18th, 2012

As health problems all over the world, even the seasoned veterans continue to urge the necessity of the problems was trained to solve ever larger. Could more people with an MPH (Master of Public Health) degree is one of the solutions? It may be good, especially if the trend is to teach social entrepreneurship is growing.

The MPH degree is a professional summit usually takes 2-3 years. Most programs are taught on campus. However, a growing number of MPH courses online, taught as the Executive MPH program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be offered. Students tend to concentrate their studies in one of the five main areas: the management of public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral sciences (including health education) and health sciences and professional environment. The degree and the doctorate was the primary qualification for those working in public health in several administrative capacities, scientific, or professional and served the environment and public health for many years.

But there is more that needs to be done. Accredited master’s programs have stagnated or seen their numbers decline in recent years. The reasons vary, but one possible explanation is that more young professionals are attracted by higher incomes associated usually with a different degree – Master of Health Administration MHA or – what is often the preferred route for hospital administration. Another possible reason is the continued erosion of support and interest in government positions, whether at the district level, regional or national, which is often used where the MPH.

Whatever the reason, the MPH has not often taken into account the extent to pursue attractive. But the tide could be? A growing number of colleges and universities adopt a more holistic approach provides to its curriculum, including courses in schools of public health. This allowed students more familiar with the myriad of health problems threatening to the world and, because of the increased activism, do something.

A related trend also shows signs of hope. In addition to being more aware of global health and health care, students are increasingly interested in “doing good” entrepreneurship. In other words, to help them improve their living conditions to people, but they want to do with an entrepreneurial spirit, whether that means creating a startup or established with entrepreneurial skills within an organization to implement the change that is faster and better. Some universities are even inclusion of social entrepreneurship into their curricula and courses and programs that promote the development of entrepreneurship among faculty members. Recently decided, for example, Dr. Dennis Gillings and his wife, set aside $ 50 million to the School of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill to fund laboratories for innovation, what will their efforts on solving the great problems of emphasis to focus public Health, whose solutions can make a difference in public health.

The bottom line – the world could use more “change agents”, the public health and have the intelligence, drive and knowledge to do the things for the benefit of communities around the world use the MPH degree. can help fill that bill and the time will come to see an acceleration, not a decrease, the devoted, aspiring candidates MPH. Schools of Public Health Efforts should intensify to attract more students and offer courses and programs to further encourage the participation of social entrepreneurship to help students of today. But they must be innovative and not business as usual. In example, some schools are still reluctant to an online MPH program for fear that the educational process will provide affected. However, no research supports such an idea. In fact, anecdotal evidence suggests strongly that the program online? as effective, if not more effective in educating students.

It is not easy to break from tradition, but the world community can not wait. It is for those who are responsible and in the pursuit of the MPH show the way for the rest of us.
